Mosquitoes
got you itching? Browse around here for some remedies. We have
reviews of different mosquito traps and an educational resource about
mosquitoes, and what you can do to avoid being bitten.
From their irritating whine to their
sting and itch of their bite, the mosquito
is at the bottom of human kind's list of favorite creatures. As new
information
emerges about the diseases they carry, their growing resistance to
insecticides,
and their increasing numbers, the mosquito, once nothing more than a
summer annoyance,
is capturing headlines worldwide.
Chemical Insecticides
There are wide varieties of chemical
insecticides used for mosquito control. Unfortunately,
as is often the case with chemical formulations, we only learn of their
toxic effects
on humans and pets long after they have been used. Most frequently,
insecticides
are sprayed on mosquito resting areas such as shrubs and tall grass.
Pros:
Effectively kills mosquitoes, but a high cost (see cons)
Cons:
Until recently, pesticides were commonly used to combat mosquitoes.
Improper use
of pesticides can cause health problems, including eye, skin and throat
irritation,
muscle spasms and neurological disorders and even death. Long term
exposure to
some pesticides have been linked to certain types of cancers. Most
requires applicator
training for "safe" use. They kill beneficial insects, and may cause
short and/or long-term ground or well water contamination. The
effectiveness of
insecticides can be hampered by weather conditions, such as rain. They
are of little
or no benefit when the mosquito resting areas are outside of your
property. (Mosquito
traps still intercept these mosquitoes before they reach you).
Here is a list of the many types of mosquito control products. We have
listed the pros and cons of each type.
